Brain Computer Interface Challenges
Brain computer interface (BCI) enables users to control devices such as computers and other gadgets using their own thoughts. BCIs track brain activity and translate it into commands for operating the device. They give feedback to the user, so that he or she can correct any inputs which generated errors.
The most widely used method for developing BCIs is through the use of electrodes attached to the head or body to record brain signals. The digital signals are analyzed to extract relevant signals that match the user’s intent. These features can include EEG and ECoG response amplitudes, latencies, power in particular EEG and ECoG frequency bands, as well as firing rate of each individual cortical nerve.
Our research indicates that the people are excited about the possibility of making use of BCI technology in a variety of ways. It is clear, however, that BCI researchers must address the many concerns voiced by the public and their own experts to ensure the responsible development of this emerging technology.
The most significant challenge that remains is improving the reliability of BCI. In the real world, a BCI must be as reliable as muscle-based movements. This requires considerable CNS plasticity that allows the BCI to become able to recognize and execute the desired commands. The cost of invasive BCIs is another important issue. This includes initial and ongoing implantation, as well as costs for technical support. If these costs can’t be decreased significantly the commercial viability of a BCI will be limited to those with severe disabilities.
